Tips for Including Siblings in a Newborn Photo Shoot

Welcoming a new baby into the family is a momentous occasion that deserves to be captured in photographs. Including siblings in a newborn photo shoot can add a heartwarming touch to these precious memories. However, managing young children and a newborn during a photoshoot can be a challenge. Here are some tips to help you prepare before you leave home and manage expectations once at the studio.

Before You Leave Home

1. Communication is Key

Prepare your older child for the photoshoot by explaining what will happen. Talk about the importance of being gentle around the baby and let them know that they will get to be in the pictures too.

2. Timing is Everything

I aim to take family and sibling photos at the beginning of your session while the older children are still fresh. This allows them to relax afterwards or be able to be taken for a drive with Dad or collected by a grandparent while the rest of the newborn photos are taken.

3. Coordinate Outfits

Select outfits that coordinate but don’t necessarily match. Soft, neutral colours work well for newborn shoots, and incorporating similar shades for the older sibling can create a cohesive look.

4. Pack Essentials

Bring snacks, drinks, and comfort items for your older child to keep them content during any downtime. Having their favorite toys or books can help them feel more at ease.

5. Practice Poses

Spend some time at home practising poses with your older child and the newborn. This can help them get used to the idea of being close to the baby and following the photographer’s directions.

Expectations at the Studio

1. Patience is Key

Understand that working with young children and newborns can be unpredictable. Be patient and flexible if things don’t go as planned.

2. Safety First

Safety should always be the top priority. Ensure that the newborn is supported and comfortable in any pose, and never force your older child to interact with the baby if they seem uncomfortable.

3. Be Prepared for Emotions

It’s natural for older siblings to experience a mix of emotions during the shoot. They might feel excited, curious, or even a bit jealous. Be prepared to offer reassurance and comfort if they need it.

4. Have Fun

Remember that the photoshoot is also an opportunity for the whole family to bond and create lasting memories. Keep the atmosphere light, have fun, and let your children’s personalities shine through.

Including siblings in a newborn photo shoot can be a heartwarming experience that captures the essence of your growing family. By preparing ahead of time and managing expectations, you can ensure that the photoshoot is a joyful and memorable event for everyone involved.
